Accelerating the Transition to Urban Sustainability through UN Inter-Regional Cooperation - WUF10 (8-13 February 2020, Abu Dhabi, UAE)
11 Feb 2020 -  Cities are at the epicentre of economic growth and catalysts for innovation and change. However, potential of cities and urban areas to achieve broad based sustainable development outcomes for people and the planet may be easily lost in the absence of holistic and cross-sectoral integrated planning, investment and decision-making processes. Sustained coordination between government organizations and stakeholders is also essential to developing, discussing and agreeing on the evidence-based context. The extent to which the ‘urban opportunity’ can be harnessed relies strongly on the capacity of national and local governments to develop and implement strategies that include cross-sectoral, multi-stakeholder integration and operate coherently on different levels and scales of development interventions. This leads to the need for both horizontal and vertical integration within countries to strengthen the policy coherence both across sectors and between levels of government and stakeholders to build a sustainable development strategy that works both top-down and bottom-up. Through an inter-regional New Urban Agenda implementation support project, the five UN Regional Commissions and UN-Habitat will strengthen policy coherence in nine countries and selected cities – Ecuador/Quito, Costa Rica/San Jose, Cuba/Havana, Morocco/Rabat, Jordan/Amman, Cambodia/Battambang, Philippines, Kazakhstan/Almaty, and Lesotho/Maseru. The project will also promote improved capacities of institutions and other agents of change in the implementation and monitoring of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda. The project will deliver greater integration of regional, national, and local dimensions of sustainable urban development and partner with countries and their cities to develop tailored implementation strategies and monitoring frameworks/actions. Emphasising South-south and city-to-city learning and knowledge exchange, this WUF 10 event provides a unique opportunity to kick-start discussions with country and regional actors. The ONE UN Room networking event will involve partners from five countries across the project focus regions, along with selected regional representatives.
