The Secretary-General addressed the ninth session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues this morning. He expressed his concern that, as described in the UN report on the State of the World’s Indigenous Peoples that came out in January, indigenous peoples suffer high levels of poverty, health problems, crime and human rights abuses all over the world. They make up some five per cent of the world’s population but one-third of the world’s poorest people.
