What Can NGOs Do to Promote the Concept of 'Women, Peace and Security' (CSW69 Side Event)
Twenty-four years ago, on October 2000, the United Nations Security Council adopted the UNSCR 1325 (2000) on Women, Peace and Security (WPS). It was a declaration that the world ought to recognize that the disproportionate impacts that conflicts and crises have on women. It also indicated that women play an important role in peace processes beyond their status as victims. It is essential for the concept of human security which acknowledges that the implementation of peace plans and consequent long-lasting peace are part and parcel of the total process, not just a moment of ceasefire, to accomplish long-lasting peace. For that purpose, the international community must prioritize human security. Militarized security could aggravate conflicts unlike like mountain gorilla's chest-beating to prevent violence.
The Civil Society firmly believes that gendered perspectives and women's voices are vital to investigate and solve the root causes of conflict with their knowledge of the lived experiences of the community concerned. It is our proposition that their voices are collaborative and indispensable to build sustainable, harmonious and peaceful societies.
