WHO - Press Conference: Fighting the accelerating crisis of drug resistance (Geneva, 20 November 2020)
20 Nov 2020 -  WHO virtual press conference to launch new, high-level group that will fight the accelerating crisis of drug resistance
WHO, FAO, and OIE will announce the launch of the One Health Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance that will advocate for urgent action to combat the threat of antimicrobial drug resistance. The group includes heads of state, government ministers, CEOs, and leaders of civil society organizations. It is co-chaired by their Excellencies, Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados.
Antimicrobial resistance endangers food security, economic development and the world’s ability to fight numerous diseases, including COVID-19. It’s making infections harder to treat and has led to increased health care costs, hospital admissions, treatment failures, severe illnesses and deaths worldwide. Immediate action is needed to avert the severe consequences of antimicrobial resistance on human, animal and environmental health.
The Tripartite partners are launching this new group during World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (18-24 November). Speakers:
· Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General, WHO
· HE Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister, Bangladesh
· HE Mia Mottley, Prime Minister, Barbados
· Dr Monique Eloit, Director-General, OIE
· Dr Qu Dongyu, Director-General, FAO
