Development and global governance topped General Assembly's agenda: Joseph Deiss, President of the 65th session of the General Assembly
23 Dec 2010 -  Development and global governance have been at the top of the agenda of the General Assembly this year, Assembly President Joseph Deiss has said in a radio interview reviewing 2010.

He pointed out that one of the year's highlights was a meeting in New York attended by over 100 heads of state who reaffirmed that the Millennium Development Goals to improve people's lives have to be achieved by 2015.

Mr. Deiss said that the issue of global governance is more difficult to understand but the world is changing.

"We are facing more and more problems that cannot be solved by individual states.  And on the other hand all states want to be sovereign. So, how are we going to bring all these counties together to solve issues like the global warming but also simply the core business, if I can say, of the UN, namely peace all over the world or other problems like migration, terrorism and so on?"
