Education Disrupted, Education Transformed
30 Jun 2020 -  As the UN marks its 75th anniversary with a global dialogue on its future, the international community faces a looming education crisis that threatens to reverse decades of progress in expanding learning opportunities worldwide. The Organization recognizes education is a human right and a powerful development catalyst, with demonstrated impact on poverty, health, jobs, incomes, growth and gender equality. As the UN Decade for Action begins under unforeseen circumstances, this crisis an opportunity to build back better, putting equity and inclusion at the center of all education policies, as well as to make learning transformative for people, planet and prosperity.

Over the past four months, education has experienced the most severe disruption since the creation of the United Nations. At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, schools, universities and other learning institutions were closed in more than 160 countries, affecting 1.6 billion students. The crisis has exposed the vulnerability of education systems and amplified social, gender, learning, and digital inequalities. Almost overnight, the right to education became dependent on connectivity as governments deployed distance learning solutions. Despite unprecedented innovation to ensure learning continuity, data show that an estimated 465 million children and youth targeted by national on-line learning platforms do not have access to the Internet at home. In Africa, some 82% of learners are without internet. Across countries of all income levels, two-thirds of teachers lack the skills to deliver on-line learning. In situations of crisis and conflict, the situation is all the more fragile.
