Event marking the 20th anniversary of the creation of the post of High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations. The speakers will address the unique challenges faced by High Commissioner Pillay and the office-holders who preceded her, as they have engaged world leaders to promote equality and justice and provide protection to victims of rights abuse.
This event also marks the publication of the first systematic examination of the High Commissioner post, The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights: Conscience for the World, by Martinus Nijhoff. Edited by Gaer and Broecker, along with 18 expert contributors, including High Commissioner Pillay and Professor Koh, this volume analyzes the achievements, leadership styles of, and obstacles encountered by the High Commissioners and offers recommendations for future action.
