Effective Mediation Meeting Hosted at Turkish Mission
In its resolution 65/283 of 28 July 2011, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General, in consultation with Member States and other relevant actors, to develop guidance for more effective mediation. In response to this request, the Secretariat held a broad consultation process to seek the views of Member States, regional organizations, non-governmental organizations, civil society, women’s groups and conflict resolution scholars. The Guidance for Effective Mediation was formally issued to all Member States as an annex to the report of the SecretaryGeneralon Strengthening the role of mediation in the peaceful settlement of disputes, conflict prevention and resolution (A/66/811) in August 2012. On 13 September, the Secretary-General presented the report to the General Assembly.
The Guidance is meant to assist the United Nations and other relevant actors to mediate more professionally and to arrive at more cohesive and complementary approaches. “This puts a premium on raising awareness about the Guidance”, as the Secretary-General says in his report. The Secretary-General together with the Friends of Mediation will launch the Guidance at a highlevel event on 27 September 2012.
As part of the event, the Secretariat will also launch the revamped Peacemaker website. The UN Peacemaker is an online mediation support tool developed in 2006 by the UN Department of Political Affairs. Intended for peacemaking professionals, it includes an extensive database of peace agreements, guidance material and information on the UN’s mediation support services. The UN Peacemaker is part of the UN’s overall efforts to support UN and non-UN mediation initiatives.
