UN relief chief: 3.8 million Ukrainians in need of immediate assistance and protection
2 Feb 2017 - Briefing the Security Council today, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, Stephen O'Brien, depicted a grave humanitarian situation in Ukraine, while re-emphasising the need for unhindered humanitarian access to the vulnerable population. Due to recent escalation of conflict in the eastern part of the country, nearly 4 million civilians - 70 per cent of whom are the elderly, women and children - are in need of basic services and protection, further exacerbated by "government-imposed bureaucratic impediments."
