Volkan Bozkir, President of the 75th session of the General Assembly delivers a message on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
17 Oct 2020 -  This year, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty takes place, as we contend with COVID-19, a pandemic that is erasing decades of hard-earned progress, in our fight against poverty.
736 million people, are already deprived of the most basic human needs, such as, access to food and water, due to extreme poverty. The pandemic, risks increasing this, by an additional 100 million people.
In 2015, the General Assembly pledged to leave no one behind, and to reach the furthest behind first, when implementing the sustainable development goals.
In this Decade of Action and Delivery, we must uphold this pledge.
As the world embarks on the largest socio-economic recovery since the Second World War, tapping into trillions of dollars, we must do more, to reach those furthest behind. We must find durable solutions on debt, to create space, for needed investment in sustainable recoveries , to support people and communities who were already struggling to survive. The pandemic has affected all of us, but the most vulnerable in society, have been the hardest hit. Let us work together, and invest in a global recovery, that truly leaves no one behind.
Thank you.
