Nuclear disarmament: UN underscores urgent need for breakthrough
27 Mar 2017 - The need to for the world to reach complete nuclear disarmament has become "all the more urgent," the UN has said, at the start of a conference to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons. Addressing the conference on behalf of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UN disarmament affairs chief Kim Won-soo warned that against the global backdrop of rising international tension and renewed arms competition, humanity's shared goal of a safer and more secure world is at stake. In addition to strengthening international norms against nuclear weapons, Mr. Kim also emphasised the need to transform the vision of disarmament into a new paradigm for sustainable security.
