Reducing disaster risk: UN envoy underscores need for prevention
Disaster risk reduction is an important component of the ongoing global efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). That is according to Robert Glasser, head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).
Speaking to UN News ahead of the second anniversary of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 - adopted at the Third UN World Conference in Sendai, Japan, on March 18, 2015 - Mr. Glasser highlighted that over the past decades, disasters have given rise to substantial losses, casualties and humanitarian needs, noting that reaction alone is not enough.
He underlined the need to scale up prevention globally, saying this would entail proactive strategies from all sectors of society, in terms of better incorporation of risk proofing in economic planning, as well as mitigation of climate change, so as to curb hydro-meteorological disasters.
