Jan Eliasson (Deputy Secretary-General) at the High level event on Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants: Critical Challenges for Sustainable Urbanization
Opening remarks by H. E. Jan Eliasson, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General at the High level event on Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants: Critical Challenges for Sustainable Urbanization
More than half of the world’s refugees and displaced live in urban areas, often in fragile cities with high levels of inequality. If unplanned, migration and forced displacement can accelerate growth of informal settlements and exacerbate existing inequalities, social tensions, risks, and lack of access to basic services and infrastructure. At the same time, examples of cities from across the global demonstrate the opportunities cities offer for a dignified life, how migrants and refugees are key to economic growth and how they can be integrated socially and spatially. An event in preparation for the High Level Summit on Refugees and Migrants planned for 19 September 2016.

Co-organized by the Permanent Mission of Italy, the New York Office of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization (CSU), in collaboration with the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UN-Women (2016 Chair of the Global Migration Group), the International Labour Organization (ILO), Network 11 and the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA)
