The Co-Chair of the thematic debate, H.E. Mr. Steven Vanackere, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Institutional Reforms of Belgium, opened the meeting and made an introductory statement.

Statements were made by the following keynote speakers: H.E. Mr. Gervais Rufyikiri, Second Vice-President of the Republic of Burundi; H.E. Ms. Selma Aliye Kavaf, State Minister for Women and Family Affairs of Turkey; and Ms. Michelle Bachelet, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.

Statements were also made by the following panellists: Dr. Shireen Sharmin Chowdhury, State Minister for Women and Children Affairs of Bangladesh; Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund; Ms. Irina Bokova, Director-General of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization; Mr. William Lacy Swing, Director-General of the International Organization for Migration; Dr. Paul De Lay, Deputy Executive Director (Programmes) of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS; Ms. Patricia Francis, Executive Director, International Trade Centre; and Ms. Thida Khus, Executive Director of SILAKA.

Statements were made by H.E. Mr. Pakalitha Bethuel Mosisili, Prime Minister and Minister for Defence and Public Services of the Kingdom of Lesotho and H.E. Mr. Evaldas Ignatačius, Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.

Statements were made by the representatives of Togo and the Niger.

Statements were also made by the representatives of the following non-governmental organizations: One Laptop per Child Foundation; East African Diaspora Networking; and Africa New Future Foundation.
