Volkan Bozkir, President of the 75th session of the General Assembly delivers a message on the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction
14 Oct 2020 -  Today, as we recognize the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, one of the most profound disasters, to affect our species, continues to threaten the lives of millions.
It is clear, we were not prepared for COVID-19.
But we can learn from this experience.
We have the tools.
The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, adopted in 2005, calls on all governments, to adopt national and local strategies, for disaster risk reduction. These strategies, aim to boost planning, and ensure that, measures, such as early warning and response systems, are put in place, to prepare for future crises. To date, at least 93 national strategies, have been developed.
This is commendable, but it is clearly not enough.
We need all countries, to live up to their commitments, to invest in disaster risk reduction, to use the opportunity to Build Back Better, to recover better.
This will not be the last pandemic, and certainly not the last disaster.
We all have a role to play, in better managing disaster risk.
Let us work together.
Thank you.
