Commemoration of the International Day of Eliminating Violence against Women (25 November)
25 Nov 2020 -  UN Secretary-General António Guterres will participate live alongside UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and UNFPA Executive Director Natalia Kanem. UN Women Goodwill Ambassadors Nicole Kidman and Cindy Bishop; SDG Advocate, UNODC Goodwill Ambassador and Nobel Peace Prize, Nadia Murad; and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee and Founder of Rise, Amanda Nguyen will participate via video.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global pandemic on 11 March, 2020. Subsequently, violence against women and girls (VAWG), and particularly domestic violence has escalated around the world. In April 2020, the Secretary-General urged all governments to make the prevention and redress of violence against women and girls a key part of their national response plans for COVID- 19. The appeal was answered in a statement by 146 Member States and Observers that expressed strong support.
As a follow up to this response and the Secretary-General’s call for ‘peace in the home,’ in August 2020 the UN Executive Committee has adopted the Political Engagement Strategy on Gender-Based Violence and COVID-19. In support of the Political Engagement Strategy and as the part of the commemoration of the International Day of Eliminating Violence against Women event, all Member States will be invited to attend. A few countries will be invited to reflect on the tangible actions that they have undertaken so far and to outline their next steps.
The Secretary-General will address the event at the Opening, reflect on presentations of select Member States on two occasions during the event and announce some of the GBV COVID-19 Champions to keep momentum moving forward.
The commemoration of the International Day of Eliminating Violence against Women will have the following objectives:
Highlight achievements and initiate additional commitments by Member States on the issue of ending violence against women, in the context of COVID-19 and in line with the Political Engagement Strategy.
Honor women’s organizations as first responders and acknowledge their leadership in ending violence against women and girls particularly in the current context.
Activate UN system wide social mobilization under the umbrella of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence and promote zero tolerance across all spheres of society everywhere.
