‘Deep sadness’ at passing away of IAEA's Director General, Mr. Yukiya Amano - UN official remarks

I was deeply saddened this morning to learn of the passing of Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Through his stewardship of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Director-General Amano worked tirelessly to ensure that nuclear energy is used only for peaceful purposes in leading IAEA in such an exemplary fashion, he advanced human well-being through efforts spanning medicine, agriculture and other vital areas.
Mr. Amano confronted serious global challenges, including those related to the proliferation of nuclear weapons, with equanimity and determination. Our world is so much better for it.
I send my deepest condolences to his family and the staff of the IAEA. In mourning his tragic loss, we are also thankful for Mr. Amano’s distinguished service to his country and all humanity.

President Espinosa sends condolences to IAEA on the passing of Director General, Mr. Yukiya Amano

The President of the General Assembly has expressed her heartfelt condolences on the passing of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr. Yukiya Amano.
In a tweet, published this morning, Ms. Espinosa paid tribute to Mr. Amano and his tireless work to build a safer and denuclearized world, to foster diplomacy and multilateralism.
Mr. Amano also was a gender champion and diligently worked to achieve gender-parity at IAEA. Under his leadership the number of female staff members increased from 23% to over 30%.
The PGA said that his legacy will not be forgotten. She extended her deepest condolences to his family, IAEA staff and the Government of Japan, which Mr. Amano distinguishably served for several decades as a former diplomat.
