The 9th Meeting of the 55th Session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD55) is taking place in New York (1 -10 February 2017) at United Nations Headquarters under the Priority theme: "Strategies for eradicating poverty to achieve sustainable development for all."
Programme questions and other matters [item 4]
The Commission began its consideration of the item.
(a) Proposed programme of work of the Secretariat for the biennium 2018-2019 The Director of the Division for Social Policy and Development, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, made a statement regarding the proposed programme of work of the Secretariat for the biennium 2018-2019, which was circulated in an informal paper.
(b) United Nations Research Institute for Social Development The Director of the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development reported on the work of the Institute.
Nomination of members of the Board of the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development
The Commission decided to nominate only one member of the Board for a four-year term expiring on 30 June 2017, in view of the financial circumstances of the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development.
The Commission decided to nominate Ms. Sylvie Durrer to serve on the Board of the Institute, for a four-year term beginning on the date of confirmation by the Economic and Social Council and expiring on 30 June 2021.
The Commission also decided to re-nominate the following five candidates whose membership is due to expire on 30 June 2017: Mr. Jimi Adesina, Mr. Asef Bayat, Mr. David Hulme, Mr. Joakim Palme, and Ms. Onalenna Selolwane, for a term beginning on the date of confirmation by the Economic and Social Council and expiring on 30 June 2019.
The Commission thus concluded its consideration of the item as a whole. Follow-up to the World Summit for Social Development and the twenty-fourth special session of the General Assembly [item 3]
(a) Priority theme: strategies for eradicating poverty to achieve sustainable development for all The Commission resumed its general discussion of sub-item 3 (a) and heard statements by the representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Malawi and Algeria. Statements were also made by the observers for Nicaragua, Nepal, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Ireland, Turkey, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Guatemala, Burkina Faso, Cuba and Zambia.
A statement was made by the observer of the Holy See.
Statements were also made by the observers of the International Organization of la Francophonie (OIF), the Sovereign Order of Malta and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Statements were made by the representatives of the International Labour Organization (ILO), United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
The representatives of the following non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council, made statements: Corporación para la Investigación, el Desarrollo Sostenible y la Promoción Social (CORPROGRESO); International Movement ATD Fourth World; Youth Alliance for Leadership and Development in Africa; and The Mountain Institute (also on behalf of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics).
