Formal recognition of the two 2020 United Nations Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela
Prize Laureates, held in accordance with General Assembly resolutions 68/275 and 69/269, will take place during the meeting.
Extract from the letter of the President of the General Assembly, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande:
"This special meeting provides the General Assembly the occasion to celebrate and keep alive Nelson Mandela’s legacy and unique contribution to the service of humanity, including promotion of freedom, justice, democracy, human rights, and gender equality; as well as his extensive work in the field of conflict prevention, reconciliation, and the promotion of culture of peace throughout the world.
In line with Mandela’s long vision for freedom and equality, I strongly encourage you, and through you, members of your delegation, to dedicate 67 minutes to helping others on Nelson Mandela International Day – 1 minute for every year of Mr. Mandela’s public service".
