UN spotlights the empowering effect of boosting women’s literacy
8 Sep 2010 -  United Nations, New York, 8 September 2010 - Top United Nations officials today marked International Literacy Day by calling for more funding and advocacy to improve literacy rates among the world’s women, who comprise two out of every three adults, who cannot read or write. The officials stressed the transformative ripple effect that takes place within both a family and the wider community when a woman is literate, with the evidence indicating it brings high economic, social and cultural benefits.
