Ad Hoc Committee of the General Assembly for the Announcement of Voluntary Contributions to UNRWA
25 Jun 2018 -  The conference, established by General Assembly resolution 1729 is the primary forum for the announcement by Member States of their financial support for UNRWA, in solidarity with Palestine refugees.
Opening remarks will be made by UN Secretary General António Guterres, President of the UN General Assembly Miroslav Lajčák, and UNRWA Commissioner General Pierre Krähenbühl, followed by statements from Member States.
UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the GA in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to 5.3 million registered Palestine refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. The agency, which is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions by Member States, is currently operating with a $250 million shortfall due to a significant reduction in funding. Without further contributions, funds will be depleted by end summer.
The UNRWA Commissioner General will present a special report on the current financial crisis, which outlines the dramatic dimensions of the funding shortfall and the resource mobilization efforts undertaken to address it, including the Dignity Is Priceless campaign. This year’s meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee will be a milestone for judging the prospects of bridging the UNRWA’s budget gap, and a platform for outlining the consequences if a significant shortfall remains.
