Volkan Bozkir (General Assembly President) addresses the Annual Conference of the Boao Forum for Asia
20 Apr 2021 -  Excellencies,
Thank you for the opportunity to address the Annual Conference of the Boao Forum for Asia.
For 20-years the Forum has provided a space for regional cooperation and connectivity, and has helped to amplify economic growth, sustainable development and both south-south and triangular cooperation. It is an honor to join you on this special anniversary.
Colleagues, COVID-19 has fundamentally reshaped our lives and put enormous strain on our economies.
While many challenges remain, there is finally light at the end of the tunnel.
Yet here, at this critical juncture, is where the multilateral system must truly step up and deliver.
We have before us the largest vaccination campaign the world has ever undertaken; plans for global socio-economic recovery; and a desire, from all corners, to build back better.
Meeting these needs will not be easy and there has never been a stronger test of the multilateral system.
But it is a test that we are ready for.
With the United Nations at its core, and with a diverse array of institutions and forums at all levels, we can deliver on the promise of a better world beyond COVID-19, one guided by the Sustainable Development Goals and built on the principles of equality, equity, resilience and sustainability.
Thankfully, we have a strong foundation to build upon.
In the Asian region, strong economies and closer economic integration are supporting economic growth and providing a boost to sustainable development.
Where aligned with the 2030 Agenda and local and national development plans, endeavors, such as the Belt and Road Initiative, offer promising opportunities to increase trade and advance sustainable development.
Relatedly, I commend the signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership last November.
This Partnership will facilitate the expansion of regional trade and investment and contribute to global economic growth and development, further uniting countries and communities in the region.
In closing, allow me to thank you once again for continuing to champion multilateralism and the principles for which it stands.
Thank you.
