For the first time since the peak of the Cold War, the world is on the cusp of a reversal of the decreasing trend of the global number of nuclear weapons. The recent rapid expansion of nuclear arsenals threatens to spark a new arms race and reverse the previous gains of nuclear disarmament, taking us further away from realizing our collective vision of a world without nuclear weapons.
Against this backdrop, there is an urgent necessity to constrain the number of nuclear weapons at its root, by banning the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.
