International Day of Care and Support
In July 2023, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted a landmark Resolution (A/RES/77/317) to observe an annual International Day of Care and Support on 29 October. This Resolution encourages Member States, the UN system, civil society, the private sector, academia, the media and the global community to recognize and celebrate this day to raise awareness of the importance of care and support and its key contribution to the "achievement of gender equality and the sustainability of our societies and economies, as well as of the need to invest in a resilient and inclusive care economy, including the development of strong and resilient care and support systems". The Resolution further invites UN Women, the ILO and OHCHR to facilitate the observance of the International Day of Care and Support, in collaboration with other relevant organizations.
In this context, UN Women, in collaboration with the ILO, OHCHR and the co-sponsorship of Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Philippines and Spain is facilitating the UN's second observance of International Day of Care and Support on 29 October 2024. The focus of this year's celebration will be on transforming care systems to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in the context of Beijing+30, elaborating on the recent UN system-wide policy guidance on Transforming Care Systems in the Context of the SDGs and Our Common Agenda. As the world gears up for Beijing+30, this event will also provide a platform to encourage world leaders to take action to transform the undervaluing and gendered division of care work as a critical lever to shift the dial on gender equality and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
