Subject Topical
Women are disproportionately targeted and suffer serious consequences as a result of online and technology-facilitated violence against women (TFVAW). The aggression faced by women and girls online also restricts their access to online services and tools, affects their work and learning opportunities, and deters their engagement as active digital citizens in important online spaces and dialogues.

The side event will acknowledge the steady and increased development and impact of anti-gender campaigns and movements. It will identify, amplify and increase awareness of practices to counter the pushback on gender equality to strengthen civic space and women's digital rights by:

  • Discussing best practices and commitments of governments, multilateral actors, civil society and other stakeholders to strengthen civic space and women's digital rights
  • Highlighting coordinated approaches to countering the challenges to international norms and standards of gender equality and preventing roll back of laws and policies for gender equality
  • Taking stock of practices the international community can contribute to the SecretaryGeneral's call for support and protection of women human rights defenders, peacebuilders and civil society, as well as specific groups of women that face violence and harassment online, including women in politics and public office, journalists, activists.
