Description

The side event will be divided into two panels:

  • Panel 1 will focus on "From Beijing to the digital era: Combating gender based violence offline & online", including the EU's recent legislation, especially the landmark Violence Against Women Directive, EU accession to the Istanbul Convention, as well as the ongoing work on the revision of the Victims' Rights Directive.
  • Panel 2 will examine "Women in leadership: creating opportunities and addressing the risks", reflecting on the challenges and successes of the last years, and looking forward to new initiatives. The panel will consider recent EU legislation, such as the Women on Boards Directive, the Pay Transparency Directive and the Equality Bodies Directives, as well as the EU's efforts towards the wider world, such as the Gender Action Plan III. The worldwide attacks on women's rights will be given due consideration.

Policy makers will exchange views on the progress and set-backs of the last thirty years, the lessons learnt and successful strategies and action plans, with a view to the final five year stretch to fulfil the promises made in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
