Description

In protests, during arrest, and in detention, state officials in a variety of countries use law enforcement equipment - from batons and handcuffs to electric shock devices and tear gas - in the commission of torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.

This side event will discuss how international trade restrictions on law enforcement equipment - a Torture-Free Trade agenda - can help prevent torture and other ill-treatment. It will consider the impact of the trade in tools of torture on human rights - including the right to freedom of assembly, and right to public participation, as well as the protection of human rights defenders and journalists - and the rationale for a comprehensive Torture-Free Trade Treaty.
