Description

This event will be a groundbreaking opportunity to discuss the global threat posed by the development and use, by a non-state actor, of vectors of mass destruction weapons, and the challenges of investigating such a complex area.

At the request of the Government of Iraq and in fulfillment of its mandate, UNITAD has been investigating crimes committed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Iraq, that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and in some cases genocide. In that context, the Team has been conducting investigations into ISIL activities relating to the development and use of weapons of mass destruction, in particular, chemical and biological weapons, in Iraq.

Based on close cooperation with the Iraqi judiciary, following several field missions in different locations in Iraq and meetings with witnesses, affected communities, first responders, and medical practitioners, the Investigative Team developed solid leads and lines of inquiry to build its case assessment.

The special event is co-hosted by: The Permanent Mission of Iraq to the United Nations, The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, and the United Nations Investigative Team to promote accountability for Crimes Committed by Da'esh / Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (UNITAD)
