Description
Created in 1899, the PCA is the oldest intergovernmental organization dedicated to international dispute settlement. It is the precursor to modern international courts and tribunals, and most of what is now considered the international legal order. The establishment of the PCA was a major milestone in the development of international law and the promotion of peace and security.

As we mark the 125th anniversary of the PCA, the Side Event on the occasion of the U.N. International Law Week seeks to animate the underlying purposes detailed in Resolution 77/322 and the PCA-MOC Resolution by exploring The Hague Conventions and its provisions that could provide avenues for creative and modern non-binding methods of dispute resolution amongst States. In particular, the event seeks to highlight the enduring salience of The Hague Conventions – two of the oldest multilateral agreements on the pacific settlement of international disputes – in multilateral diplomacy and thus promote universal membership in these treaties.
