Press Conference: Ocean expectations and announcements in week two of COP 16 – United Nations Biodiversity Conference 2024
Encouragingly, there has been notable headway in the negotiations on Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Areas, which are essential for the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework and achieving its 30x30 target. Yet, progress in the talks on conserving and sustainably managing marine and coastal biodiversity has been frustratingly slow. Failure to resolve this could stall critical guidance by two years, at a time when marine ecosystems are facing unprecedented threats.
This press conference brings together civil society advocates, funders ,and Indigenous Peoples representatives to react to COP16's Ocean Day, unveil major new funding announcements, and outline what needs to happen in the final stretch of the negotiations. With Ministers arriving this week, the stakes are high - now is the time for decisive action to protect our ocean and safeguard coastal communities.
