The year 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) and the women, peace and security (WPS) agenda as well as the 30th anniversary of the (1995) Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Despite significant progress in advancing parts of these commitments, one of the most persistent challenges remains the continuously low levels of participation by women in peace and mediation processes. According to a frequently cited study, between the years 1992 and 2019, women constituted only 13 per cent of negotiators and six per cent of mediators in major peace processes.
The Secretary-General's Common Pledge to Increase Women's Full, Equal, and Meaningful Participation in Peace Processes was launched on 24 October 2024 at the annual Security Council debate on WPS during the Swiss presidency. To date, 37 adopters (member states, regional organizations and civil society organizations) have joined the Common Pledge.
