Description

In many countries, there are barriers to access to justice for persons with disabilities. Little expertise is available to deal with this problem. The side-event "Access to Justice" is dedicated to Art. 13 CRPD. Its goal is to promote international exchange in order to reduce the existing barriers. By providing insights for litigation, the side event is also intended to contribute in the longer term to the creation and establishment of a broader "jurisprudence" of the UN committees in the field of disability equality law and thus to the worldwide implementation of the CRPD. Questions and problems such as the following will be discussed: What can be done at the legislative level to reduce the barriers that persons with disabilities face in justice systems? What systemic and legal barriers do women and girls with disabilities encounter in institutions and in the community when they report cases of sexual violence and what solutions are there? Insufficient access to legal support: lack of specialized lawyers, financial resources and, in terms of strategic procedures, organizational resources.
