Summary
Children represent a significant proportion of trafficking victims worldwide, with girls being disproportionately affected. Additionally, children are twice as likely to face violence during trafficking than adults, according to the UNODC's Global Report on Trafficking in Persons (GLOTIP). Regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean bear a disproportionate burden, with children making up for 60 per cent of detected trafficking victims.

Description
This event will urge accelerated action to end child trafficking as we approach the 10th World Day against Trafficking in Persons on 30 July 2024. This year's global campaign for World Day calls for urgent and comprehensive action to tackle the issue of child trafficking, protect vulnerable groups from exploitation and support child victims of trafficking. This event is particularly timely due to the review of SDG16 during the 2024 HLPF; target 16.2 calls to "end abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence and torture against children". The event will draw from intersecting intergovernmental processes including the 2024 Working Group on Trafficking in Persons which consider the topic of "national issues and priorities concerning child trafficking" and the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development review of SDG16 in order to provide recommendations to feed into the Summit of the Future in September 2024, and as we look ahead to the 2025 UNGA Appraisal of the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons
