Description
The Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT), established under the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT), is mandated to prevent torture and ill-treatment through regular visits to places of deprivation of liberty and to assist State Parties in fulfilling their obligations under the treaty.
As the guardian of the OPCAT, the SPT regularly meets with the States parties and Signatories of the Optional Protocol, using this platform to inform State Parties about key developments in its work and thematic priorities. It also enables States to raise concerns, propose support mechanisms, and explore avenues for strengthened collaboration in the effort to prevent torture and ill-treatment.
