UNODC will organize a high-level side event focusing on the preparatory process for the Congress, at the margins of the third Committee of the General Assembly at its 79th session. The side event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 16 October 2024 from 13.15 to 14.30. In the immediate follow-up to the 2024 Summit of the Future, the event will also illuminate the substantive focus of the 2026 Congress, linking the elements of the Congresses agenda to the outcome of the Summit and its documents – towards the accelerated implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and beyond. In particular, the event will contemplate ways to further accelerate efforts to meet existing international commitments and discuss concrete steps to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities with regard to strengthening crime prevention, criminal justice and the rule of law; addressing the impact of the triple planetary crisis; harnessing digital technologies in a responsible manner; promoting meaningful youth engagement; and intensifying international cooperation and partnerships.
