The Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the Context of Just Transition Economy: The Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the Context of Just Transition Economy (UNPFII Side Event)
Indigenous Peoples of the world are seeking fair conditions for the transition to a green economy, when the extraction of critical minerals does not pose risks to the ecosystems on which depend sustainable development and existence of Indigenous Peoples.
In 2025 Brazil will host the 30th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Climate Change with the main theme "The Economy of Transition". The side event will help prepare Indigenous Peoples from various sociocultural regions of the world for the upcoming discussions, including on the solutions they will propose.
In addition, the event will cover the preparation of national biodiversity strategies, the development of standards for interaction between States, Indigenous Peoples and businesses in the relevant area, and will contribute to the discussion of the materials of DESA's and UNPFII's 2024 Expert Group Meeting on the topic "The rights of Indigenous Peoples, including those in voluntary isolation and initial contact in the context of the extraction of critical minerals".
Discussion question: How can we ensure the full inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in international, national and corporate biodiversity and climate action programmes? In what direction should corporate, industry and international standards be strengthened to ensure a just economy transition? How can we ensure that Indigenous Peoples have access to adequate financing? What additional steps need to be taken to ensure that the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and human rights-based due diligence principles, including FPIC, are implemented in biodiversity and climate action?
