(Part 2) High-level plenary meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons - General Assembly, 77th session
The purpose of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (26 September) is to further the objective of achieving a nuclear-weapon-free world through mobilizing new international efforts as well as enhancing public awareness and education about the threat posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination.
The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons provides an occasion for the world community to reaffirm its commitment to global nuclear disarmament as a priority. It provides an opportunity to educate the public - and their leaders - about the real benefits of eliminating such weapons, and the social and economic costs of perpetuating them. Achieving the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons remains one of humanity's greatest challenges and has always been one of the key objectives of the United Nations.
