Description

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Genocide Convention). The Convention was the first human rights treaty adopted by the General Assembly on 9 December 1948 in response to the horrors the world had witnessed in the Holocaust. Every year, 9 December marks the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime, established by the General Assembly in 2015 (A/RES/69/323), as well as the anniversary of the Genocide Convention.

To mark this year's 75th anniversary of the Genocide Convention, the event to commemorate the International Day will focus on the theme: "A Living Force in World Society: The Legacy of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide". This event will be held on Friday 8 December 2023 at the United Nations Headquarters.

Leading up to the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Genocide Convention, on 8 December 2023 at the UN HQ, the United Nations Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) are organizing a joint side-event, showcasing stories of religious individuals and communities that have been promoting, protecting, and implementing the Genocide Convention.  Speakers will share their stories and provide insights about how the legacy of the Convention can be enhanced to protect populations from genocide.
