The Kind of Leader the World Needs Now – 81st Session of the UN General Assembly
To foster an intergenerational dialogue on the leadership qualities needed to strengthen multilateralism and enable the United Nations to respond effectively to today's global challenges, while ensuring that young people's aspirations help shape the future of international leadership.
This session will explore the qualities that tomorrow's global leaders—and particularly the next generation of UN leadership—must embody to respond effectively to today's interconnected challenges.
Building on the intergenerational dialogue held during the Candidates' Debate in Geneva, three distinguished international leaders—Helen Clark, Irina Bokova and Susana Malcorra, candidates in 2016 to be UNSG—will be joined by two students in a conversation that bridges experience and emerging perspectives.
The discussion will also draw on the "Ten Qualities for the Next UN Secretary-General," developed by students participating in the Her Turn Initiative following their engagement with global leaders. These reflections will serve as a starting point to discuss the values, skills and vision needed to lead both the United Nations and the international community in the years ahead.
