A panel of experts will examine the powerful propaganda that enabled the Nazis to successfully spread their racist ideology and gain influence. What was the impact of this, how did the society recover from it and what lessons are there to be learned for educating against extremist views and help build a more peaceful world today? Following the statements a discussion will be held with the audience on effective educational tools and the responsibility of society in helping to stop the spread of hatred and extremism. Ms. Hawa Diallo, Public Information Officer in the NGO Relations Section of the Department of Public Information, will deliver welcoming remarks. The panellists will include Dr. Steven Luckert, Senior Program Curator, Levine Institute for Holocaust Education, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum; Professor Jaimey Fisher, PhD, Director of the Davis Humanities Institute, University of California, Davis, and author of Disciplining Germany: Youth, Reeducation, and Reconstruction after the Second World War (Wayne State University, 2007); Ms. Virginie Ladisch, Head of the Children and Youth programme at the International Center for Transitional Justice; and Ms. Gillian Kitley, Head of Office, Office of the Special Advisers on the Prevention of Genocide and on the Responsibility to Protect. The discussion will be moderated by Ms. Kimberly Mann, the Chief of the Education Outreach Section in the Outreach Division of the United Nations Department of Public Information.
