Food insecurity is both a driver of forced displacement and an outcome of displacement in general. Droughts in the East and Horn of Africa and the Sahel, as well as the global impact of the Ukraine crisis in the Middle East and Asia are resulting in devastating levels of food insecurity which is propelling displacement – both within countries but also across borders.
Food insecurity creates new protection risks and exacerbates existing ones. The global food crisis is also a protection crisis.
The High-Level event will take place in person prior to the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly High Level Week. Some speakers will join virtually. It will be a panel event co-hosted by UNHCR, WFP and the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations and involve interested Member States, affected countries and food security actors.
