On 24 December 2024, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime; Strengthening International Cooperation for Combating Certain Crimes Committed by Means of Information and Communications Technology Systems and for the Sharing of Evidence in Electronic Form of Serious Crimes. The convention is the first global criminal justice treaty adopted in over 20 years and represents a milestone for multilateral action to promote international cooperation to prevent and combat cybercrime. The Government of Viet Nam has graciously offered to host the Signing Ceremony of the Convention, organized in collaboration with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The Ceremony is to take place in the capital of Viet Nam, Ha Noi, on 25 and 26 October 2025, calling on all States and regional economic integration organizations to express their support for a multilateral solution to a global challenge.

On the occasion of the General Assembly's High-level Week 2025, The Government of Viet Nam and UNODC are convening a side event with the objective of underscoring the importance of multilateral treaties to address global challenges, the latest example of which is the Hanoi Convention. Speakers will have the opportunity to inform how the Convention will benefit international cooperation to prevent and combat cybercrime, as well as showcase how the Signing Ceremony will constitute an important step where all stakeholders cooperate towards a safer digital future.
