Description

12 June 2024 marks the 95th year since Anne Frank was born.  The United Nations honoured her legacy at a special event held next to the Anne Frank tree. Donated by the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect on the North Lawn, the tree is descended from the horse chestnut tree that grew outside the attic in which the Frank family hid for two years from the Nazis, before they were betrayed.

The commemorative event was organized by the Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme and the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations. Ms. Melissa Fleming, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications moderated. Speakers included Her Excellency, Ms. Bahia Tahzib-Lie, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations; Her Excellency, Ms. Stephanie S. Sullivan, Acting Deputy Representative of the United States Mission to the United Nations; Ms. Sharon Douglas, Anne Frank Center USA, and Ms. Blake Appelbaum.

The Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme was established by General Assembly resolution 60/7 in 2005 to further education about and remembrance of the Holocaust to help prevent future acts of genocide.  For more information, please visit www.un.org/en/holocaustremembrance
