Summary
The side event of the Academy forms part of the THAIL's commemorative activities celebrating its centenary.
Description

It is particularly exceptional because of the institution's Centenary, and it will for the second time host as its two guest speakers the Registrar of the International Court of Justice, H.E. Mr. Philippe Gautier, and the Secretary-General of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, H.E. Mr. Marcin Czepelak. They will discuss, together with The Hague Academy of International Law  Secretary-General Jean-Marc Thouvenin, the role and crucial importance of the Courts of, as well as the courses given at, the Peace Palace

The Hague Academy of International Law organized its first summer courses in 1923, and since then has published the courses taught at its premises by the most renowned professors in the famous Collected Courses of the Academy of International Law. More than 600 auditors from all over the world attended summer courses every year, including a number of them selected and funded by the United Nations following a very fruitful partnership between the two institutions. This link exists and regularly gives rise to a General Assembly resolution welcoming THAIL's contribution to the dissemination and teaching of international law. It is in this context that the Academy organized four 'side events' at the UN Headquarters during the International Law Week in October 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022.  This year's Side Event of the Academy (October 2023), exceptional because of the institution's Centenary, will for the second time host as its two guest speakers the Registrar of the International Court of Justice, H.E. Mr. Philippe Gautier, and the Secretary-General of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, H.E. Mr. Marcin Czepelak. They will discuss, together with The Hague Academy of International Law  Secretary-General Jean-Marc Thouvenin, the role and crucial importance of the Courts of, as well as the courses given at, the Peace Palace.
