Ensuring inclusion of persons with disabilities in a changing world: the role of sports and culture (COSP12 Side Event)
12 Jun 2019 -  Article 30 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) recognizes the right of persons with disabilities to take part on an equal basis with others in cultural life, recreation, leisure and sport, acknowledging that their active participation in sport and cultural activities contributes to the full and equal realization of their human rights, as well as to the respect for their inherent dignity, in line with the human rights-based approach to disability outlined in the CRPD.
The side-event will focus on the full participation in sports and cultural activities of persons with disabilities, especially persons with mental and intellectual disabilities and on the autism spectrum, showcasing concrete examples of governments’ strategies and policies focused on promoting participation of persons with disabilities in those activities and, chiefly, the benefits of interaction and synergies between governments and civil society organisations to this goal.
