18 May 2021 -  Security Council VTC Briefing in connection with Peace and security in Africa (G5 Sahel)

The members of the Security Council will consider the latest report of the Secretary-General (S/2021/442) on the activities of the Joint Force of the Group of Five for the Sahel (G5 Sahel: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and the Niger) – and the African Union, and the support provided by the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

The Joint Force of the Group of Five for the Sahel (FC-G5S), was formed in 2017 by Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger (G5 Sahel) to combat terrorist and criminal groups in the region.

The expected briefers are Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix; Chadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chérif Mahamat Zene, on behalf of the Group of Five for the Sahel (G5 Sahel); Force Commander of the FC-G5S, General Oumarou Namata Gazama of Niger; and Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) Chair, Ambassador Mohamed Fathi Ahmed Edrees (Egypt).
