24 May 2021 -  H.E. Mr. Volkan Bozkir, President of 75th session of the General Assembly delivers remarks at the Youth Forum “Countering Corruption Through Collaboration. Youth Perspectives and Engagement” on the margins of the United Nations special session of the General Assembly on Corruption

It is a pleasure to address you on this unique occasion. At the outset, I thank Ghada Waly, Executive Director of UNODC and her team, for their innovation in organizing this Youth Forum, and adapting to a virtual platform in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

One group most hurt by the pandemic has undoubtedly been, you, our youth. Your generation has experienced an unprecedented disruption – in education, employment, social interaction and discovering the world.

However, this pandemic has also provided you with a window on the state of the world as it came to a standstill. You have had the chance to examine the pre-existing inequalities exposed by the pandemic. You have witnessed how nefarious actors took advantage of this crisis to engage in crime and corruption when lives were at stake. You have joined the dots between corruption, a trust deficit, sluggish economic development, and insecurity.

Now that you have made your assessment – it is time to take action. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, youth play a crucial role in rebuilding a more just, equitable, resilient, and sustainable world and in particular -countering corruption.

Your insights are essential to the work of the United Nations and its General Assembly. I firmly believe that intergenerational collaboration is fundamental to achieving solidarity, transparency, accountability, and trust among States, peoples and generations as we aim to end corruption.

We look to your generation to develop and implement innovative anti- corruption practices and policies that have a tangible impact. I hope that you will avail of this opportunity to exchange ideas, build your networks, and take the initial steps towards transformational change.

To this end, I am delighted to inform you that I will select a youth representative here today to deliver a statement summarizing the discussions you will have over the next three days. To be clear – although this will be one voice, this will be a megaphone to amplify youth voices in the parliament of humanity.

Together, you are 1.8 billion strong. You will forge our pathway to 2030 and beyond. You have the power to end corruption, reduce inequalities and create a better world for all.

I hope you will join me on UN WebTV from June 2 nd to 4 th for the General Assembly special session to discuss challenges and measures to prevent and counter corruption and strengthen international cooperation.

I thank you and I wish you all the best throughout this Youth Forum.
