Volkan Bozkir, President of the 75th session of the General Assembly delivers a message on World Cities Day
31 Oct 2020 -  Today, we recognize the World Cities Day, under the theme of valuing our communities and cities.
For many of us, COVID-19 has given us even greater appreciation, for our shared living spaces.
Whether it’s access to parks and bike paths, to safe food systems, to reliable waste management, or to orderly public transportation, the pandemic underscored, how important it is, to maintain a healthy, sustainable urban environment.
As we celebrate our communities and cities, let us thank the essential workers, who have kept all our systems running.
And let us recognize and value the elements that make our cities great: namely, cleaner, breathable air; green spaces; and access to health and social services.
Since 2007, more than half of us live in cities, and by 2030 this will reach 60% . Therefore, it is critical that we plan our cities, so they are drivers of sustainable development.
As we move beyond COVID-19, let us continue to embrace, the need for sustainable urban living, and recognize our cities around the world, that are hubs for ideas, commerce, culture, science, social, human and economic development.
Thank you.
