For 65 years, the Portuguese Armed Forces has contributed in UN Missions and operations. Portugal began with the inclusion of five Portuguese Military Observers in the United Nations Observation Group in Lebanon (UNOGIL), in 1958. Since then, Portugal has contributed with troop contingents, military observers and security forces to several UN peacekeeping missions, where they seek to promote global peace, stability and security.

The UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) has handed over a first base to the government, as part of its disengagement plan from South Kivu, according to Secretary-General Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.

Complex crises and a "climate of division" among governments is complicating the work of UN peacekeepers in Sub-Saharan, says the top UN official overseeing their work. "The multiplication of crises, and the more exacerbated divisions across the Member States, makes it more difficult for us to operate, especially because political efforts in this climate of division and tension are not making enough progress," UN Peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix says.

The United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial is an important opportunity for Member States to come together in a collective effort to strengthen the effectiveness of peacekeeping operations and their impact on the communities they serve. In 2023, the Peacekeeping Ministerial will be hosted by Ghana in Accra on 5-6 December.

By sharing different perspectives, experiences and good practices, including from Chiefs of Defence Staff, this side event will provide a platform for knowledge sharing and peer learning on the role of gender-responsive leadership in the full and equal participation of women in uniform and the implementation of UNSCR 1325 and subsequent Women, Peace and Security (WPS) related resolutions, as well specific WPS tasks in peacekeeping mission mandates.
