The Rome Statute bestows upon the International Criminal Court (ICC) jurisdiction the broadest range of sexual and gender-based crimes (SGBC) of any judicial body in the history of international criminal law (ICL). In spite of this potential, the Court's record in adjudicating for SGBC is mixed.

Since taking office in 2021, the ICC Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan KC has emphasised his deep commitment to strengthening his Office's investigation and prosecution of crimes against and affecting children. The development, updating, and implementation of strong, clear policies is critical to success in this work. In December 2022, the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) launched its new Policy Paper on Gender Persecution.

Promoting the Role of Women in Security and Criminal Justice Responses to Terrorism and Violent Extremism in Africa (2023 Counter-Terrorism Week Side-Event)
Strengthening women's roles in criminal justice as well as law enforcement is an essential element in long-term efforts to prevent terrorism and violent extremism. The joint UNODC-EU side event will highlight the efforts made at the international, regional and national levels to promote women as an essential actor in successfully building peace efforts, preventing violent extremism and responding to terrorism in the African context.
